OVAL-CAKES!

So I realized that I've never featured my bunny Oval-Cakes on here.. which is kind of crazy.

I got Oval about 2 years ago on a whim. I had just finished my finals my junior year and wanted to reward myself by buying something furry. I had been longing for a pet all through college but never really had the proper living arrangements to have one. I was considering getting a dog or maybe a cat until I found out that the apartment I was going to be moving in to didn't allow dogs and charged a lot extra for cats.. so the next logical pet was a rabbit! I had owned some hamsters before and one AWESOME guinea pig named 'Pig' so I figured a rabbit was a decent enough compromise. And what great 'compromise' he was!!

Here are some pics from his Valentine's Day photo shoot. Enjoy!

MY FIRST REPEATING PATTERN!

Hey yall!

Ok so I'm super pumped about this. Like it says.. I made my first repeating pattern! I've sketched out lots of "patterns" before but never fiddled with them enough on my computer to make them seamlessly repeat. It was actually really easy to do in Illustrator. I followed along with this chicks tutorial, cheggit!  I love how much fast food is trending in design/illustration/fashion right now, well I guess it's been trending for a while but yea.. It's great. So much Americana pop culture-y eye candy goodness! Mmmmmm burgers.

Even though this pattern would serve better as wrapping paper or a textile, I made some wallpapers out of it anyway (warning: your icons will kiiiind of disappear on this background but eh.. I still love it!)

         ◄ H☆PPY HALL☻WEEN ►

YAY!!! It's finally Halloween (my favorite holiday). Unfortunately Hurricane Sandy's kind of put a damper on the holiday BUT All Hallow's Eve will prevail! Last weekend I was Lisa Lopes aka Left Eye from TLC for Halloween, which was actually a last minute costume made entirely from clothes I already owned (guess it's clear I'm a 90's kid..) and the weekend before that I was... a Candy Corn! I've always wanted to be something "classic Halloween" before like a spider, witch, or black cat but I still wanted to be semi-original.. so a piece of Candy Corn it is!

This weekend I'm having a Halloween BASH and this time around I'm going to be an evil nurse who poisons people called "The Noxious Nurse", part of a 2 person villainous duo that talented Mr. Kyle Harlan thought up. I haven't quite finished getting all the pieces together for it but.. hopefully it'll turn out decent.

I'll leave yall with these (the gif featured up top)..
Some sugar skulls I illustrated in my free time inspired by greed, faith, love and wealth.

HAPPY OCTOBER 1ST!

Hello. And Happy Month of October! I can safely say that this is my second favorite time of the year (summer ALWAYS comes first). Halloween is hands down the BEST holiday. I just love love love scary movies, carving pumpkins, dressing in costumes, scaring people, making Halloween treats, and decorating my apartment with skeletons, bloody hand-prints, cobwebs, GHOSTS, zombies, etc. There's just so much fun, imagination, and creativity to be had :)

So Happy Haunting!

American Greetings Design-a-Letter Workshop

A couple of weeks ago I joined The Letter Trend Group at American Greetings (where I work now) and participated in a hand-lettering workshop. I had a friggin blasssst! I wasn't able to stay the entire day but at the beginning of the workshop senior designer, Mike Gold gave a great demonstration on how to use pen & ink to create letter forms. At our disposal was a plethora of different inking pen nibs, brushes, pencils, and even twigs and sticks (my favorite)! It was a pretty loose workshop where everyone was free to create as much or as little as they wanted; a letter, a word, a sentence... whatever! We were given a list of frequently used words and phrases for AG cards like "Mom", "Holidays", "Enjoy", etc. It was so nice to work with my hands again, I haven't used pen & ink since college. I definitely plan on dusting off my ink set and water color paper block and doing more of this kind of stuff at home :)

"WHERE THERE IS LOVE LET THERE BE MARRIAGE"

Recently I've been in cahoots with local wedding officiator, Tim Greathouse on a pretty cool project. Tim is currently on a mission to collect 2,000 signatures to help the Freedom to Marry Ohio advocacy group repeal and replace Ohio's 2004 amendment to the Ohio constitution that bans same sex marriage. In order to do this Tim needed some signs created to display at his signature "collection sites" (some of which being the wedding receptions of a few voluntary couples). Check out Tim's specific post on the matter here.

Tim was definitely one of those "dream" clients. He sent me the copy he wanted on the poster and he suggested the use of gay/lesbian alliance symbology, the rest was up to me! AWESOME. I knew I wanted to exercise my hand-done typography skills for this project and that I wanted the type to have a calligraphic/wedding invitation feel. I also wanted to incorporate the symbol for gay/lesbian alliance in a subtle way. vvv Cheggitout vvv

UPDATES ON HOME INSPECTION LOGO

So the name of my brother's company has now changed to ProGuardian. Unfortunately "Guardian" was taken. These are some revised logos I came up with according to my clients suggestions. He wanted the words in the logo to be upper and lowercase to clear up any confusion. He also wanted to see a house somewhere in the logo and for the logo to be more detailed. I have to be careful though because logos are supposed to be very simple and clean.. too much detail and the mark will get difficult to read when shrunk down for small pieces like business cards!

What do you think?

GUARDIAN HOME INSPECTION LOGO DEVELOPMENT

Hey y'all! It's been a while since my last post so I thought I'd share some updates with you. I'm currently on the hunt for a full-time graphic design position, it's tough but I have a feeling something will come through soon! In the meantime, I've been keeping myself busy and slightly above broke by doing lots of different freelance projects/jobs here and there! One of my most recent freelance endeavors is a branding project (i looovvvve creating logos) for my brother. He recently got his home inspection license and would like to start his own home inspection business. He came to me to help him create an identity for his business. Originally he thought of some names for the company like ProSpec or Prime home inspections but those names are a little generic and I thought it might be cool to utilize our unique last name, Guardalabene, which is Italian for "Guard the good" or "Guardian of the good". I threw out the suggestion of Guardian Home Inspections and we both liked the ring to it! Plus anyone who has knowledge of romantic languages like Spanish or Italian might identify the last name connection and find it kind of cool and memorable. So Guardian Home Inspections it is! Strong, simple and rooted in our name.

When it came to developing the logo I did a lot of research on what is currently out there.. Just by doing a broad Google search for "Home Inspection logos" I found that there's a lot of stale logos with typical "abstracted" roofs placed ontop of some text or logos with a big clunky magnifying glass slapped onto it. Of course I also found a lot of logos with the classic inexplicable "swish" shape in it. Is the swish meant to make the logo look "cool" or "high tech"? I think in most cases all the swish shape does to a logo is make it look extremely generic. A swish is so nonspecific and vague that you could slap it onto just about anything and call it a day... which is why I HATE swishes! Sorry, I kind of went off on a rant there. Finally I found a surprising number of logos that.. well are identical! The poor entrepreneurs probably went to one of those "design it yourself" websites and picked one out of maybe 10 different house shapes then jammed there name into it.. unfortunately by doing this they created a logo that is void of any uniqueness, originality, creativity and memorableness. I strongly believe that "design it yourself" websites severely devalue the worth of graphic design and devalue those who have worked and studied their craft for years to obtain a degree in visual communication design. Again, I'm ranting sorry!

So this has turned in to a pretty long post but let me wrap it up by talking about what I created to solve this design problem. After researching what home inspection logos were already out there, I decided that I wanted to create anything BUT what others have done. I wanted to reach a little further than the obvious and extremely over-done solutions but at the same time I needed to stay within the recognizable boundaries of visual cues that denote "Home Inspection". Developing a logo is a delicate procedure where you don't want to completely reinvent the wheel so that the viewers of your mark will have no clue what the logo is for but at the same time you want to create something that hasn't been done before, something unique that will stand out in a competitive market.

I wanted to take two different visual routes with this project. One route was to create a logo that resembled some kind of "approval" stamp since after a home inspection the house will either have a safety seal of approval or.. not. I thought an approval stamp would be a positive association with a home inspection business and it's a visual reference that has enough familiarity with out being too expected. The other route I took was to create a logo that was type-dominant. Something that didn't need too many flourishes and extraneous imagery. I picked type that felt was very strong and industrial and that could stand alone or with a very simple glyph. I did want to create at least a couple logos that fit the industry "standard" of what you expect in a home inspection logo so I created a simple eye glyph with a magnifying glass tucked into it as a nice surprise and a stripped down silhouette of a house pushed into the background of another logo. I'm pretty happy with this first set I developed. Overall I think they're not too wildly different but at the same time they're modern and unique enough to stand out amongst the MANY examples of logo generic-ness.

For anyone who made it to the end... CONGRATULATIONS. Hopefully that wasn't too boring and hopefully I didn't come off as some "know it all design snob". I'm not!! I most definitely have a lot to learn in this field and am aware that not everyone went to design school or even cares about design (although they should because it effects everything!) Although this blog's main goal is to showcase my work it's secondary goal is to educate people a little on my design process and on the principles of design in general. Thanks for reading and I'll be posting more on this project's progress in the near future :)

FREE SPACE BUNNY DESKTOP WALLPAPER!

So I'd like to try and make free wallpapers more of a regular thing because they're fun and who doesn't love free stuff?! Plus it's a way for me to be completely creative with no restrictions which I need once in a while. So hopefully this will be the first free wallpaper post OF MANY (don't hold me to that though)!

A VERY SPECIAL 70TH BIRTHDAY CARD FOR MY GREAT AUNT

Designed this little guy last week to celebrate my great Aunt's birthday. I probably should've photographed it BEFORE I wrote in it but eh oh well! I cut out the matching heart confetti by hand as a fun (and hopefully not too messy) surprise! The card wasn't a standard size so I custom made a translucent sleeve for it.

DECO DISNEY

Last week my boyfriend and I went on vacation to Disney World! It was my first time there, ever!! We drove straight through (bleh.. 17hrs) and stayed for 3 days in Orlando and 2 in Daytona.

The first Disney park we decided to go to was the former MGM Studios now Disney's Hollywood Studios. As soon as we entered the park I found myself drawn to all the exaggerated Art Deco architecture pulled from the 1920's/30's. Personally, I think Disney's over-the-top cartoon like take on classic Deco style is awesome! It makes it easy to find common shapes, patterns, and forms throughout buildings. Instead of taking the standard pictures of goofy or of my boyfriend and I standing infront of some ride I was more keen on pointing the camera up at all the overlooked architectural beauties and squatting down to take photos of interesting garbage can signs or water-fountain tiles. Don't get me wrong, we took plenty of obligatory corny Diseny World photos to show the parents too!

Here's a collection of some of the Deco bits I really loved!
